AN EXCITING collection of 19th century paintings by a previously undiscovered Tavistock artist is to go under the gavel of auctioneer Robin Fenner on July 8.
The artist, whose talents have been unrecognised until now, is Louisa Honey, daughter of William Honey who is remembered as a 'gentleman of independent means'. She painted the pictures between 1860 and 1900 while the family lived at 1 Russell Street, Tavistock.
Mr Fenner, said: "This is certainly one of the largest finds I've ever come across. We're delighted that yet another Tavistock artist has come to the fore. It's been a complete surprise because we had no idea that William Honey's daughter painted."
The work has been valued at £800 to £1200, but is expected to fetch a lot more than this at auction.
Mr Fenner explained: "The paintings are all signed and dated and are highly collectable as they show how much Tavistock has changed in just 150 years.'
