FARMERS are taking time out from their dairies, orchards and farmyards today to give shoppers at Waitrose in Okehampton the chance to taste the fruits of their labours. The event is being held as part of the Waitrose ?Meet the Farmer? initiative which will give customers across the country the chance to hear the stories behind their weekly shop and reconnect with the food they eat. Waitrose branch manager Damien Heard said: ?Our meet your local farmer event is a great opportunity for people to learn more about their regional produce and the importance of buying food that meets the highest welfare, environmental and taste demands. ?We are delighted our suppliers can play such a central role in bringing the stories behind their products to life for local people.? Waitrose says the campaign aims to motivate customers to choose products that pay farmers a fair price and benefit the future of rural communities. Suppliers will be on hand to answer questions from customers from 11am on Thursday, October 4. Shoppers will also have the chance to sample food fresh from the farm.
