THIS year's show was the end of an era for Susan and Peter Kent, of Hatherleigh-based Mid Devon Fallow.

The couple, who have a herd of around 300-400 deer, have been attending the Devon County Show for some 20 years — but now, thanks to a planned new rail link in London, their venison business is to be wound down.

Susan, surrounded by the delicious waft of sizzling venison burgers, said: 'We retail in London, and this railway line is going to go straight through where we sell.

'There's a lot still to sort out, but the venison business was financed through selling in London, so it looks as though it's just going to have to be time to do something else.'
