THE combination of Okehampton Primary School, Dartmoor Decorative and Fine Arts Society and the Museum of Dartmoor Life have once again joined forces to produce an outstanding exhibition of children’s work following on from a successful exhibition on the First World War last November.

The artistic duo of Louise Burrell and Susan Eckles, complemented by the literacy workshop devised by Jan Goffey, has brought the theme of ‘Mosses and Lichens of Dartmoor’ to the John Young Gallery in the Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton.

Hazel Fox, the headteacher of Okehampton Primary School, was delighted the school had been chosen again to take part and the school’s artist in residence Louise Burrell initiated the project.

Louise and Jan asked the local branch of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts to commission Susan Eckles to lead the clay workshops.

The Dartmoor branch of NADFAS has supported the project in any way it can as part of their Young Arts Projects.

More than 50 children took part in the after school workshops using a range of media including textiles, and many new skills were learned.

The literacy group were introduced to botanical Latin and had great fun translating and devising new names for the lichens.

The exhibition is open to the public from now until September 2.
