LEARNING is what school is all about and at Okehampton College it is fast becoming a family affair. This academic year has already seen a wide range of initiative for whole family learning and 2008 is all set to follow a similar course. Keith Webber, of Okehampton College, said: 'Over the last term we were pleased to stage a number of activities including taster sessions for parents in science, maths and English. 'Just some of the initiatives included an evening meal for parents, prepared by our catering students, a night of jazz and a presentation by the Royal Science Institution. 'There were also various quiz evenings.' This term the college is planning to run free of charge evening classes in family first aid, adult numeracy and sessions led by assistant English faculty leader, Kate Tilley, designed to help parents understand the English National Curriculum. Extending the learning community remains an important goal for the college and this term's community science event will be a family quiz in The Octagon at 7pm on Tuesday February 5. There will be a 20 minute film on Energy Sources For The Future, following which teams will have to answer questions using the college's interactive voting system, Qwizdom. Prizes include theatre and sport tickets amongst others. Entry is free with teams being no more than five people with at least one being a pupil at Okehampton College or from a primary school in the area.
