Devon Intermediate cup final (aet)

Lamerton 5

Babbacombe Corinthians 2

LATE drama at Newton Abbot's Coach Road saw Lamerton relinquish a two goal lead to be forced into extra time.

Gifted the lead by Babbacombe keeper Rob Stone when James Healy took advantage, Lamerton went two goals clear in the first half via Kev Swift's penalty.

Babbacombe scored just before half time, when a mix up in defence saw Dan Lawton slot home.

Lamerton, who dominated the first period, could have restored their two goal lead seconds later, but for a last ditch challenge on Steve Gibbings.

The game produced a tense second half and Babbacombe turned up the heat. They squandered several chances, while Lamerton keeper Pete Daniel made some fine saves — in particular a sprawling double save from close range. With Babbacombe pressing, more chances came for Lamerton to seal victory.

Stone saved Dan Healy's point blank range effort in the 70th minute and then after getting caught in no man's land he could only watch and hope as Swift's 18-yard effort came back off the bar. With only seconds remaining, Babbacombe equalised. A ball in from the left zipped across the box and as Rich Searle's desperate sliding tackle seemed to have ended the danger, the ball again fell kindly to Lawton and he scored his second. That was as good as it got for Babbacombe as Lamerton took control in extra time. Two quick goals inside the first ten minutes all but ended the tie.

Searle restored the lead, when he got ahead of the last defender and side footed past the onrushing Stone. A minute later Tony Jones' 30-yard cross-cum-shot flew wickedly over a rooted Stone. Man of the match Steve Gibbings had the final say when on a one-on-one he guided the ball home.

This excellent victory was followed up by a lack-lustre performance in a 0-0 draw against Altarnun two days later.

• Lamerton are away to Pensilva on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm.
