A HEALTH centre was evacuated last Friday in Callington as explosions were heard from a nearby electricity sub-station. Some loud bangs and black smoke from the sub station in Haye Road caused some panic in the vicinity, said Callington fire station officer Kevin Rookley. More than 13,000 homes in the Callington area lost their electricity supply for 20 minutes when the circuit breaker on the 33,000 volt network exploded and they were put on an alternative supply. Station officer Rookley said his crew could not go anywhere near the sub-station but they cordoned it off and evacuated the health centre and nearby residents. A spokesperson for Western Power Distribution said the circuit breaker failed but the damage was so severe that the reasons why were yet unknown: She said: ?There was no fire but it would have caused a bang when it failed. ?There was no safety issue and the customers were not inconvenienced as they were connected to another supply.?
