OKEHAMPTON College held an 'Energy Evening' this month, to raise awareness in the community about the threat of global warming and the steps that can be taken to reduce it.
A number of different speakers and organisations gave presentations on the night. They ranged from Jeff Ridley, a climate scientist from the MET Office in Exeter, to the Devon Association for Renewable Energy.
The event stemmed from the college's recent renewable energy grant from EDF Energy. The company has financed a large solar power scheme at the school, allowing the college to get a significant percentage of its energy from a sustainable source.
Teacher Keith Webber, organiser of the evening, said: 'As a school, we have been successful with bids for renewable energy. In return, the backers of the schemes want us to encourage sustainability within the community, which is what this evening was all about'.
Daryll Chapman, principal at the college, was equally enthusiastic about the college playing its part to raise awareness.
He said: 'This event offered people the opportunity to question experts about sustainable energy. We are committed to this cause as a college and think it is important to inform the community about the issue'.
