TAVISTOCK Air Cadets are about to start their winter programme after an exciting summer. Twelve cadets flew in Tutor aircraft at RAF St Mawgan, Newquay, most enjoying aerobatics and taking control of the aircraft themselves. Two cadets went to RAF Shawbury and four to RAF Wittering for annual camp. The cadets were able to experience life in the modern Royal Air Force first hand. Activities included visits to flying squadrons and aircraft, shooting, map reading, sport and museum visits. Five cadets, accompanied by two staff, visited the Red Arrows at Exeter Airport and were able to view the back up aircraft, observe refuelling and have a briefing from the ground crew who fly all over the world with the team. A team of 14 cadets took part in the wing training weekend at Okehampton Camp competing in ten different events against 22 other units. The fourth place gained was an improvement on last years place of 11th. Corporal Ali Cox led the team on the leadership task and achieved first place. During the weekend cadets ran in the Wing cross country and came second overall. Squadron CO John Olver said: 'The cadets who came on the weekend were a real credit to the squadron and Tavistock.' The squadron is looking to recruit adult staff who would like to become uniformed officers, call 01822 612743 for more information.
