THIS year, Tavistock Squash Club has two teams competing in the Plymouth Companies League. The second team, playing in the Plymouth Companies Division 3, has started the season well with two convincing wins against University Staff and Travel Bug. On Tuesday, the team travelled to Torpoint to play against the Garden second team. First up was Pete Walshe against Kevin McSherry and after losing the first game came back to win the second 10-8. Pete began to find his form winning the third game 9-2. Although exhausted Pete managed to hold on to win the fourth game 10-8 and the match by three games to one. Next up was Malcolm Horton. against Luke Deacon — some 40 years younger. Using a variety shots Malcolm won the first game easily 9-2. In the second game Malcolm won 10-8. The third game was one of Malcolm's finest recoveries going on to win 9-7. Captain Mike Gray has met Paul Driver three times before and not lost. Paul stretched Mike and played a range of drop shots and length shots that had Mike scrambling to retrieve them. Mike was always on the back foot and lost 3-0. John Jameson came up against perhaps the best player in the league, Stuart Cox. John went down fighting 3-0. Dave Ruffell has improved considerably last season. Against Stewart Thumper he lost the first two games 7-9 and 4-9 and looked to be on his way out. Dave pulled himself together and clawed his way back to win the third game 2-9 and the fourth 5-9. The whole match was to be decided on the last game which Dave took 4-9, winning his match 3-2 and securing the win for Tavistock 3 matches to 2. The Garden won nine games and so did Tavistock. However, Tavistock won three matches to The Garden's two and so secured the three extra points, making the final score 12 points to Tavistock and nine to The Garden. Anyone wanting to play squash should come along to Wednesday club nights at the courts behind Kings, off Pixon Lane.
