THERE is something for everyone in the forthcoming Kelly College Concert Society season. Now in its 45th year, the society gives people living in the West Devon area the opportunity to hear outstanding professional musicians without having to travel to Plymouth or further afield.
The opening concert is given on September 29 by Concerto Della Donne, named after three celebrated singing ladies of the Italian Court in the 1580s.
Music for three sopranos flourished in 17th century Italy and France and the repertoire includes works by Charpentier, Lully and Couperin. The ensemble is enhanced by harpsichord or organ and is one of the leading baroque music groups.
Octanphonie, a fascinating line-up of pairs of oboes, clarinets, French horns and bassoons, will play music from three centuries, including Mozart and a work by Andrew Wilson, Director of Music at Kelly College, on November 10.
On December 1 there will be a violin recital by Ruth Palmer, described as ?one of the most gifted and musical players of her generation?.
Ruth has won numerous prestigious awards and is accompanied by Alexei Grynyuk. The programme will include Bach, Beethoven and Ravel.
The guitar features on January 26 2005, when Morgan Szymanski will be the soloist. He won every available guitar prize during his time at the Royal College of Music.
A mother and son piano duo appear on February 23. Helen and Harvey Davies are among the foremost exponents of piano duet repertoire in the country and have a special interest in British music and that of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The final event of the season on March 9 is a rare chance to hear the combination of flute and harp. Judith Hall was described by ?Gramophone? magazine as ?a truly magic flute?. Hugh Webb is a principal harp with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Both he and Judith have busy solo careers, but also tour as a duo, playing for festivals and music societies.
All concerts are on Wednesdays in the Melvin Hall, Kelly College, Tavistock at 7.45pm.
On September 15 at 7.45pm the society holds its reception and recital by music scholars. This is open to everyone and admission is free.
Tickets for the season will be available at this event. A subscription ticket (£25 or £20 concessions) gives a saving of almost 50% on individual ticket prices (£8 or £6 concessions).
Under 18 year-olds, accompanied by a ticket holder, are admitted free to all concerts.
