MEMBERS of Tavistock Athletic Club achieved some excellent results at the cross-country county championships on Sunday, despite the club?s turnout being affected by both illness and injury.

The venue was the old Exeter county showground and the course was fairly flat, although soft and heavy underfoot.

Emma Passmore had another good run, finishing strongly in eighth place in the U15 girls? race.

The best individual performance of the day from a Tavistock runner came from Alex Richards in the U15 boys? event. He ran an excellent race, moving up into second place in the final lap and holding on to the position to take the silver medal in the championships in his age group. In the senior ladies? event Nicole Heryet was the only Tavistock runner and gave an indication of her improved performance over the 8,100m course, finishing in a good 27th place.

Tavistock had a strong turnout in the senior men?s event with seven runners competing. Robin Musgrave was the first Tavistock runner to finish, in 29th place, winning the silver medal in the Vet 50 category. Mike Tomes finished in 33rd place with Allan Herdman, running his first county championships, finishing 39th and winning the bronze medal in the Vet 50 category.

John Outhwaite was the next Tavistock runner home in 43rd place with Tim Gent finishing in 49th followed by Peter Bazley in 59th and Tim Powell in 63rd, earning him the silver medal in the Vet 60 category.

In the final race of the championships there was a rich reward for an excellent team performance from the three Tavistock runners. Adam Holland had a good run finishing in eighth place with an out-of-form Luke Dumper finishing in tenth place. Adam Tofield worked from the start to finish in 13th place.

The combined results were good enough to win them the team event and the gold medal in the championships U17 junior men?s event.
