THE local badminton season got off to an early start with the Badminton Bonanza at Torpoint and Rame Leisure Centre. A number of local players entered from both BATs and Callington Badminton Clubs decided to enter the event. In the men?s league doubles event Alan Berry and Jonathon Freeman won their round robin group and went through to the final. In the final they came up against a pair they had already beaten in the round robin stages and continued to show their dominance with a comfortable win. In the ladies? league doubles event Lorna Garbett and Anna Pascoe fought their way through to the final losing only one event in the round robin group. In the final they came up against a very experienced pair who play in a division higher of the Plymouth and District Badminton League. Though Lorna and Anna chased down everything experience proved the winner on this occasion. In the mixed doubles James Payne and Corrina Garbett played well together in the round robin stages but found the experience of the Torpoint players too much to handle. In the end they had to settle for third place in their group. The mixed doubles league event was the hardest fought event with two local pairs determined to gain the upper hand. In the round robin Jonathon Freeman partnered Lorna Garbett and found themselves in same group as Alan Berry and Francessca Morton. When they came up against each other it was very close with Jonathon and Lorna taking the first end and Alan and Francessca the second, sending the event into a third end. The third end was very close but in the end it was Jonathon and Lorna who went through as group winners. The two pairs met again in the final and in the end Jonathon and Lorna just managed to take the final points in each game despite the excellent play of Francessca Morton, who played beyond her years in each game. At the end of the Bonanza the players from BAT?s and Callington Badminton Clubs came away not only pleased with their achievements but also ready for the start of the league season.
