NEW Year?s Day was a very special occasion for Bere Alston couple Horace and Eleanor Austin (left) who celebrated their golden wedding. They were married on January 1 1955 at Holy Trinity Church, Bere Alston and the Rev R Crookshank officiated. The four bridesmaids each carried muffs, quite fitting for the weather which had been much colder and dry unlike the rain of this year. Horace and Eleanor Austin (nee Griffiths) went on to have four children, Robert, Beverley, Lindsay and Melanie and have lived all their married life in Bere Alston. They celebrated their anniversary with their immediate family at the Harvest Home. This included their seven grandchildren, two great granddaughters, their best man, Horace?s twin brother Roy, and one of the bridesmaids, Eleanor?s sister, Amy. The celebrations continued throughout the day and the couple will be enjoying a well-earned short break later in the month.
