Tavistock U16s 19

Sidmouth U16s 32

TAVISTOCK took on the league leaders and almost pulled off a shock defeat. Fielding a strong team they took the game to the visitors for the first 15 minutes and opened the scoring through Algy Gordon, his first try for the club, after a mazy run and neat pass by scrum half Moy.

Two mistakes by Tavistock allowed Sidmouth to score twice and a further try and a penalty followed for a half-time score of 20-5.

Captain Sam Morton, usually number 8 but playing in the centre, crashed over for two second half tries to earn his man-of-the-match award. Will Pickard tackled ferociously and made many yards on the break. Lawson at second row worked hard and drove at the defence many times. Smerdon at full back cleared a lot of danger and Smith at stand off broke down many moves with fine cover tackling. Moy converted two tries.

Tavistock looked the better team for most of the game and only needed to overcome some weak tackling and spilled ball to have won this match.

THE momentum Tavistock has been building over the last month was given further impetus by this convincing win.

While the team?s performance and passion were less intense than in recent matches, there was a confidence running through the side that was unstoppable.

The first half was largely dominated by the forwards, with long sequences of rucks and mauls deep in the home side?s territory. From these Friend and later Jenns broke out to score a try apiece - the latter his first for the club.

Liskeard mounted a few attacks, but these were soon snuffed out thanks to sound defence, notably by Thompson and Frost.

The second half belonged to the backs: Lawson was switched to full back where he had an excellent attacking game, injecting pace into the back line which led to his scoring a try in the corner. A superb conversion by Campbell gave Tavistock a 17-point lead.

Tavistock looked as if they were losing their composure, but hurt Liskeard in the best possible way ? with two converted tries. Both came from passing the ball along the backs and first Ewing changed the angle of attack to get in under the posts, then Burton cruised around his opposite number to touch down.

TAVISTOCK came close to a victory in this game despite missing several key players.

Both sides found little space to run, but Patrick Warlow broke tackles to make strong runs to score early on.

Liskeard kept the pressure on but good tackling by Tommy Workman and Pascale Burton kept them out.

In the second half most of the pressure came from Tavistock. with strong scrumming from Aston Bray and good rucking by Oliver Frost.

Always a try behind, Tavistock pushed hard to break the Liskeard defence with both Rhys Morgan and Workman coming close.

A well executed three-quarter move resulted in slick passing between Warlow and Alex Evans, who scored a brilliant try in the corner.

THE first six minutes saw both teams working in the middle of the pitch with the ball rarely travelling far from the centre line.

The stalemate was broken when Rhys Dunford plucked the ball from a maul and zigzagged through the defence to open the scoring.

The home side kept up the pressure with Cameron Hogg never far from the action and Mark Friend combining with Joshua Stephens on some penetrating runs.

Joshua Leeson, who dominated lineouts, won clean ball against the throw and gained 10 yards before smuggling it to Elliot Hoyte who ran in the second try.

Early in the second half Philip Snell converted his blind-side rush for the line into points. Liskeard soon pulled one back.

After prolonged forward pressure Joe Hair rolled off the back of a maul and his unstoppable momentum took him over.

Tavistock were playing good flowing rugby and with the help of the fresh legs of Elliott Northmore and Nathan Alford, Hoyte broke from deep in his own half to finish the scoring.

Barnaby Frost also made a valuable contribution before going off injured.

This Sunday Tavistock U10s host a Devon festival for 16 visiting teams at Sandy Park.

TAVISTOCK played strong forwards rugby and earned a victory in a hard fought contest.

A strong run from Monty Burfield took the home side into the lead but this was quickly nullified by a determined visitors? team.

The second half saw both sides score again and there was little between them. The only difference seemed to be Tavistock?s determination in the maul. This proved to be the determining factor. Tavistock seemed to be held up five metres from the Liskeard try line but heaved their way closer. Liskeard did not dig their heels in as deeply as Tavistock did their toes and the ball crept towards the line. Liskeard held the ball up for as long as they could until Edward Longdon managed to ground it for the final, and winning, try.

This match showed continuation from the week before when Launceston beat Tavistock 25-10 in the most thrilling game of the season.

Launceston, the stronger of the two sides managed to sneak an early try and showed great passing skills to edge further into the lead but this was quickly pinned back by Monty Burfield with a blazing left wing run into touch. Tavistock?s Patrick Ferguson was carried off due to injury. This seemed to rock the young players a little and Launceston capitalised with a third try just before half-time.

The second half started as energetically as the first with Tavistock feeling the game could still be taken. Edward Longden?s try for Tavistock encouraged them in their own belief but this time it was Launceston?s fine defensive play that kept Tavistock out.

Tavistock had gone with a smaller squad than their rivals and began to loose some speed. Launceston made the most of this with two late tries.

In addition to the two try-scorers Louis Ferguson?s strength and Hallam Bourton?s determination made a difference to the spirit of the side.

TAVISTOCK took the lead from the kick-off with a try from Jamie Stephens following a weaving run.

Liskeard equalised immediately only for Jamie Stephens to regain the lead with another fine effort.

Rhys Davis and Henry Salmon extended the lead for Tavistock before Liskeard pulled back with a try either side of half-time.

Salmon again extended the lead, following an evasive run by Frasier Bayliss. Tavistock then put themselves out of sight with a 40 yard run and try from Jonty Newton and the second of the day from Rhys Davis following great support work by Sam Northmore.

Liskeard pulled back with two tries only for Davis and Salmon to extend the lead in the last few minutes.

TAVISTOCK took the led from the kick-off with a fabulous evasive run from Rory Kirkman. Rhys Davis scored the second following good interplay between William Colton and Theo Evans.

Liskeard then had a purple patch running in two tries either side of half-time.

Tavistock applied sustained pressure with Jake Backway making a great run down the right wing to touch down, only to be called back for having a foot in touch, but Liskeard held out for a deserved victory.

Liskeard and Looe U7s 35

TAVISTOCK scored first and never looked back as they displayed good attacking skills to stay one step ahead of a spirited opposition. The confident running and passing movement was the key to unlocking the Liskeard defence.

Annabel Longdon scored a hat-trick of tries, Max Phillips got a brace and Peter, Alex, George Carter and James Ware each stormed over the line to ensure a well worked victory.

The Tavistock defence performed well with Harry Snowden, Charlie Wood, Jordan Stacey and Harriet Edwards making some vital tags.

Liskeard were grateful for the contribution Tavistock players Robert Bone and David Milligan made, scoring four of their tries between them.
