BELSTONE had their first loss this season in a South Devon league game on Sunday at Rew Meadow with Paignton convincing winners by 120 runs. Paignton won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors? captain Michael Benton (57) played a fine innings at the top of the order hitting four 4s and three 6s in his half-century. Andrew Paterson (9-0-28-4) and Aidan Easterbrook (8-2-34-3) both bowled well for Belstone with Paterson continuing his fine start to the season. After Benton was dismissed with the score on 105 the remainder of Paignton?s batsmen helped to bring the score to 188/9 after 40 overs. Belstone?s reply got off to a fast start with Pete Gross (10) and Richard Drake (28) adding 37 runs off the first six overs. After Gross was unfortunately run out in the 7th over, Drake continued to play well until being dismissed by Chris Smith (8-1-14-3) in the 18th over with the score on 61. Drake?s dismissal triggered an epic collapse, even by Belstone?s standards with the last 8 wickets falling for 7 runs in 4.3 overs. The main beneficiary of the collapse was Daniel Bourke (6.2-0-8-6) who bowled accurately and moved the ball both ways off the pitch. Belstone?s final total was 68 from only 22.2 overs. Belstone man of the match: Andrew Paterson.
