POLICE enquiries are continuing into the death of a West Devon man following an incident last weekend. Officers were called to a terraced cottage in Chillaton at 8.42 pm on Saturday — the 59-year- old man was taken to Derriford Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A major crime investigation was launched into the death and forensic examinations at the cottage have taken place. A 52-year-old woman who was present in the cottage was arrested the same night — she was released on police bail on Sunday, to return to Charles Cross Police Station on March 10. A police spokesman said: 'Following a forensic post-mortem examination, it has been established that the male died as a result of a stab wound. 'Police are keeping an open mind as to the circumstances surrounding the death, but officers do not believe any other people, other than the deceased and the female, were present in the house at the time of the incident. 'Although a person was initially arrested and interviewed regarding this incident, this does not necessarily indicate that they were involved in the death.' Family liaison officers are supporting the family — police were still unable to release the name of the dead man as the Times went to press, as they had been unable to contact all next of kin. Sgt Rachel McLellan, of Tavistock Police, said: 'This sort of incident is very unusual. Certainly we are not looking for anyone else involved in this case and keeping an open mind as to what happened. 'Our neighbourhood team leader, Sgt Hughes, has conducted a community impact assessment in which the feelings of the local community have been gauged. 'PCSO Dave Chapple has been down to the village on several occasions to make sure everyone is okay and to answer any questions or concerns residents may have, and he will certainly be around regularly over next few days.' Sgt McLellan said anyone who feels they can help police with their enquiries, or anyone who has particular concerns as a result of last weekend's incident, should call PC Kevin Reed, the neighbourhood beat manager, at Tavistock Police Station.
