THE shrill ring that tells youngsters an ice-cream van has arrived will be replaced with more soothing sounds, as part of a special art project in West Devon.

The sounds of Dartmoor will be broadcast from ice-cream vans parked in moorland locations this weekend as part of this year's Nine Days of Arts event.

Yelverton-based arts organisation Aune Head Arts have launched the project to allow customers to enjoy a natural concerto with their cornet.

Three Willy's ice-cream vans at Pork Hill, Burrator Down, and Cadover Bridge will be taking part in the sonic experiment between noon to 5pm, on Saturday and Sunday.

Cool customers may be taken aback to hear their ice-cream being served against the backdrop of a carnival, birds, steam railway, rainstorms, sheep, ponies, auctions and rushing water.

Aune Head Arts were invited by the Nine Days of Art committee to create an event, and responded with the novel idea of ice-cream van broadcasts.

The soundtrack has been created using recordings from the organisation's Sounding Dartmoor Project.

Nancy Sinclair from Aune Head Arts said: 'A full four seasons of sound on Dartmoor will be broadcast from three Willy's ice-cream vans. With Sounding Dartmoor we are capturing the soundscape of Dartmoor at the turn of a new century.

'If you missed the dawn chorus, the Mortonhampstead Carnival, the red deer rutting season or the winter storms in Beardown Hill, now is your chance to hear them.'

Partial funding support for the ice-cream installations has been provided through Nine Days of Art, which opened in Barnstaple last Saturday.

The West Devon section of the art festival opens this Saturday and runs until September 29.
