AN all-women barbershop-style chorus impressed judges to win top marks and several classes at the recent Saltash Festival.
The Plymouth Mayflower Chorus, with members from Princetown, Horrabridge and east Cornwall, sung their way to success at the festival, coming away with first place trophies in the Barbershop Chorus and the Octet classes.
The chorus, who sing four-part unaccompanied harmony, took top marks for their up-tempo rendering of 'The Moment I Saw Your Eyes', followed by the beautiful ballad 'At Last'.
Invited to perform at the Saltash Festival Winners' show, the Mayflowers were then presented with the Mary Brown Trophy for Outstanding Barbershop performance, and jointly won the trophy for top marks in the festival, scoring ninety.
Musical director Sarah Gill said: 'We always put a lot of energy into our performances, and have fun while we sing.
'We have been concentrating on improving our vocal skills, which shows in the standard we've managed to achieve in the last few years.'
The Mayflowers' style and success continues to attract members from Princetown to Newton Abbott and South East Cornwall.
They will be competing at national level in May against barbershop choruses from all over Britain, when they attend the Sweet Adelines International regional convention in Birmingham.
