A FLOOD defence scheme for North Tawton is on schedule ? weather permitting ? to be completed by the end of the year.
Three months into construction work, contractors say that the £750,000 scheme for the town is going well.
Work on the project started in late July and when complete will end the constant misery of homes being flooded in the town.
North Tawton?s flooding problems are unique and are not solely related to the flooding of the River Taw which runs through the town.
A complex system of streams, changes in weather patterns, high annual rainfall, surface water run-off from highways and an old sewerage system make the situation even worse in the town during heavy rainfall.
Contractors are building a flood wall and flood banks for the River Taw, making improvements to the stream and constructing a flood storage lagoon.
West Devon Borough Council is behind the scheme ? appointing consultant engineers, seeking funding, buying appropriate land and selecting contractors for the work.
Cllr Nick Morgan, who represents North Tawton on the borough council, said he was delighted that the work was going well.
?The contractors have been extremely good ? they have consulted us all the way through and have cleaned up after the work regularly trying to keep disruption to a minimum.?
