THE position of town centre manager at Okehampton OK! is to come to an end due to the completion of funding.

In a statement to the Times this week the company, which is responsible for promoting Okehampton, said it was currently preparing a funding application under the European Objective Two scheme to enable a new project to be initiated for the town.

'The Okehampton OK! Town Centre Management Project and programme funding will shortly be at its completion and the position of town centre manager, that has been occupied by Sidney Thompson, has to come to an end,' the statement said.

'In the meantime the town liaison office in St James Street will stay open and be manned by chamber of trade members.

'The directors of Okehampton OK! Limited would like to extend their thanks to Sidney Thompson for his valued contribution to the programme's success'.

Okehampton OK!, the aims of which include attracting new business, creating new jobs and attracting funding for specific projects, has been previously funded by European 5B money.

Chairman of the company John Elson said enough money had been kept back in the budget to maintain the office.

'All the major work we needed the manager to do to achieve certain objectives on the programme such as town surveys and work on the industrial estate has been done,' he said.

'However, we will be maintaining the office so there will be some continuity until we can acquire the funding for a new programme.'

Mr Thompson joined Okehampton OK! as town centre manager in September 1999.
