Launceston v Ordulph Taverners

THE Ordulph completed their first double of the season in emphatic style on Saturday when they comprehensively beat Launceston by 160 runs.

Having lost the toss the Ordulph were asked to bat first on a very damp wicket. Patient batting by Gliddon and Stanton along with, at times, some wayward bowling allowed the score to move along steadily despite the difficult batting conditions.

Despite the loss of their openers to Lunt (3 for 52) the Ordulph run rate was still well above what could reasonably be expected with the conditions prevailing.

With the arrival of P Hodges and Daymond to the crease the run rate went up another gear. With some excellent running between the wickets and several boundaries the pair put on 110 runs in little over 17 overs.

Daymond finished up with an exceptional 65 and P Hodges with 51. With the Launceston bowlers? heads now dropping the Ordulph middle order and tail seemed to be able to plunder runs at will.

Churchill smashed a rapid 32 with Bellamy knocking up his customary 17 in quick time including one six. With Folley chipping in at the end with a quick 15 not out the score moved on to a formidable 246 for 7 after 40 overs.

Launceston never really looked like being able to match the Ordulph run rate as Lethbridge and Folley did what Launceston were unable to do by putting the ball in the right place and letting the wicket do the rest. As early as the third over Lethbridge (3 for 22 off 8) was striking to remove both the Launceston?s number three and four batsmen in the space of two balls with only two runs on the board.

A bout of big hitting by Hoskins (18) moved the score along until he lost his leg stump to Folley.

Further wickets to Folley (2 for 22 off 9) and Lethbridge left Launceston in real trouble after 18 overs with five wickets down and only 46 on the board. The screw was tightened further with the pace of Bellamy and Gliddon now being introduced to the attack, Gliddon producing exceptional figures of 1 for 7 off 6, with his first three overs being maidens.

A further wicket for Bellamy (1 for 14 off 5) was just reward for a good spell of aggressive bowling.

A brief three over spell from spinner Bill Amery rewarded him with his first league wicket.

Only Launceston opener Baker (24) hung around for any time and eventually he was removed by a superb ball from Gliddon. In the 32nd over it was all over with a direct hit from Folley on the stumps running out the last Launceston batsman with only 77 on the board.

Next week Ordulph again entertain Launceston in the KO Cup semi final at Kelly College.
