Plymouth Combination Ellis Cup
Tavistock RFC thirds 93
Devonport High School Old Boys seconds 0
A storming display from Tavistock thirds in this cup quarter final completely overwhelmed their plucky, but outclassed opponents.
The Old Boys were quite unable to cope with the pace and movement from the home team three-quarters and although the visitors' forwards did at times manage to make life difficult for the home pack, Tavistock forwards quietly went about their work and supplied an abundance of good ball for the backs to run with.
Tavistock set off at a furious pace and after securing the ball from the kick-off, a quick move through three pairs of hands and full-back Doug King was over in the corner with less than a minute played. A second try followed after four minutes, again after good possession secured by the forwards and some pacy running from the backs.
After that, it became something of a procession, with a further four tries scored by the time the game was 25 minutes old and Tavistock were already out of sight. Two more tries were scored before half-time and with three conversions, Tavistock led 46-0 at the interval.
The only downside was a bad leg injury to prop Jim Ross who had to leave the field.
The second half was a repeat of the first and another seven tries were scored by the 70th minute, which with conversions brought the score to 93 - 0. The home team pressed for the further score needed to bring up the century of points, but the Old Boys managed to prevent any further scoring in the last 10 minutes of the match.
The 15 tries were shared between 11 players, demonstrating how much of a team effort this impressive win was.
