ST Andrew’s Primary School recently held its annual Apple Day.
The school welcomed Celia Stevens who talked about the history of the Bramley apple and her great-grandfather, Henry Merryweather, and his role in commercialising the fruit which is used around the world!
St Andrews has its own community apple orchard which has over 40 different types of apple trees. Throughout the autumn classes have been visiting the orchard collecting apples and participating in a wide range of science and art activities.
Ros Knight, former teacher and fundraiser for the community orchard, also came along to the day. Ros and Celia judged the apple baking competition which children and parents were invited to take part in.
Children concluded the day with an assembly all about apples, an apple fair selling their apple related produce and the arrival of the apple press from Cotehele House.
