PUPILS in Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 at Delaware Community Primary school are starting the new school year with an exciting new dimension to music lessons.

The school has bought ukuleles in order for whole classes to learn how to play this fun instrument.

Headteacher Lynn Nash said:‘The 2014 National curriculum for music requires Key Stage 2 pupils to play instruments in ensemble contexts and we are very fortunate at Delaware that one of our teachers, Louise Owen, is a talented ukulele player.

She is going to teach the children some simple tunes so that, hopefully, by Christmas, they will be able to put on a performance for the parents. I think that every child should be given the opportunity and experience to play a musical instrument at some point in their lives — who knows where it might lead?’
