A HEADTEACHER from a West Devon primary school has been conducting ‘driveway lessons’ during lockdown to help pupils with school work, writes Lindsay Turpin.
John Clarke from Horrabridge Primary and Nursery School is just one teacher who has been praised for visiting pupils and giving them a lesson through an open window.
Parent Jenny from Horrabridge contacted Mr Clarke for help as the whole family was struggling to help daughter Temi with her Year 6 maths work.
Jenny said: ‘When you admit to struggling with improper fractions and 15 minutes later the headteacher shows up to take over — Horrabridge Primary and Nursery School is the absolute best.’
Another parent, Caroline said: ‘Homeschooling three children, Jack and Ryan age 11 and Tara age 5, with both boys having EHCPs [Education, Health and Care Plans] it’s been pretty challenging at times but Horrabridge school has gone above and beyond to help.
‘The children’s teachers Mr Marchant, Mr Powe and Mrs Downing have been checking in constantly, with headteacher Mr Clarke phoning most days to help with maths sessions, even popping over to teach from the end of the driveway. This dedication is what makes the school so amazing.’
Mr Clarke said: ‘We understand that these are difficult times for parents, carers and pupils alike. Whilst running virtual classes from home, our teachers try to keep in contact with our families as much as possible to provide support as we feel this is beneficial to the development and well-being of the children in our community.
‘I enjoy teaching and have missed seeing the children day to day. Driveway teaching has given me the chance to help some families to improve the learning of their children.’
