A NEW easy access footpath at Burrator Arboretum and nature reserve was officially opened by BBC South West weather forecaster Emily Wood. More than 100 people enjoyed a guided walk around the new footpath, which was re-opened as part of South West Lakes Trust's Walk Devon programme, and learned about the wildlife the wetland habitat has to offer, including fungi, bats and dragonflies. At the same time families also explored the new self-guided nature trail and enjoyed pond dipping, followed by hot chocolate and an Easter egg hunt. Since October, South West Lakes Trust staff and volunteers have been hard at work in the arboretum, restoring the main footpaths and reinforcing the boardwalk to create an easy-access circular trail, enabling those with mobility difficulties to access the wildlife haven. One hundred and fifty two volunteer days have also been contributed in carrying out lots of practical conservation tasks to the area and designing the new self-guided nature trail. This project was made possible with £51,000 of funding received from Biffa Award, Heritage Lottery Fund, South West Water and West Devon Borough Council as part of the wider Burrator Historic and Natural Environment Project.
