WEST Devon businesses, including those working in the Borough?s agricultural industry, are being urged to contact the council if they have been financially affected by the foot and mouth outbreak in the South East. The council fears the outbreak may be causing real financial hardship for some farmers and rural businesses. Cllr James McInnes, leader of the council, said the authority would do everything it could to help those facing a financial knock-on effect due to the outbreak. He said: ?We are here to support our businesses and our farmers throughout this very worrying time. We can offer practical support and advice and it is possible that we may be able to help with financial assistance through the benefits process. ?It?s an anxious period for everyone working in the industry, and the Blue tongue virus is only adding to concerns.? Cllr McInnes welcomed news that the European Union confirmed exports of meat could resume from the South West from today last Friday?. He said: ?The resumption of exports is a chink of light at the end of the tunnel for our farmers. But what they really need now is sustained support to see them through.? West Devon?s benefits team is on hand to receive calls from those affected who may need financial help and advice. Reduced income may mean that some businesses and people may be entitled to housing benefit and council tax benefit. The team can also discuss options for paying council tax or business rates with anyone experiencing sudden difficulties. To find out more contact 01822 618800 for council tax or 01822 618888 for benefits. Businesses suffering financial hardship can also apply to the council for rate relief. Applications must be supported with accounts covering the last two years, a statement and projection covering the current trading period and a brief statement indicating the reasons why hardship is being suffered and its extent. To find out more about business rate relief and to receive an application form call the business rates department on 01822 813751. The council is also keen to encourage firms to take up small business rate relief. Since its introduction in April 2005, 70% of all eligible businesses have taken up the relief, one of the highest in the South West. Once a completed application form is received, eligible small businesses with rateable values below £5,000 receive a 50% discount on their business rates bill. There are also discounts available for businesses with a rateable value under £10,000. To find out if your business is eligible for small business rate relief, contact the Business Rates department on (01822) 813751.
