Carlsberg South Western League

Callington Town 1

St Austell 2

BOTH sides should take some credit out of this hard fought encounter at Ginsters Marshfield Parc on Saturday.

With all the rain during the week, the fact this game was on was a credit to the new drainage and the groundstaff.

However, the persistent rain that fell just before kick-off made the top surface slippery.

The opening goal came on 21 minutes when Gary Whieldon was gifted an opportunity to fire past Town keeper Andy Brenton after two defenders had failed to clear the danger.

But Callington battled back and equalised when Stuart Wakenshaw?s run into the box was crudely ended by a defender?s boot. Gavin West fired the resultant spot kick past Gary Penhaligon.

The crossbar came to the aid of both sides early in the second period before Gary Dyer shot past Brenton on 61 minutes to secure the points for the Lilywhites that completed the double for the China Clay club.

For Callington, there were again signs that things are improving but they need to start picking up the points if they want to avoid a lengthy re-election fight.
