A VITAL community transport association is this week appealing for more volunteer drivers, following a recent rise in passenger numbers.

Tavistock Community Transport Association runs the highly popular Tavistock Country Bus service, which runs a five day a week programme for residents in the town and surrounding area.

Heather Smith of TCT, said: ?TCT is staffed entirely by volunteers. The community bus offers services to people without easy access to conventional public transport. It provides Tavistock residents with three local routes and runs traditional market day services into the town centre from smaller villages in the area.

?The bus also makes regular journeys to destinations further afield, including Exeter, Paignton and Truro ? for example, on Easter Saturday, there?s a trip going to Truro.?

At the moment there are five drivers but ideally, TCT would like another five volunteers on its books. Currently, the service runs on Tuesday through to Saturday.

Heather said no previous bus driving experience was necessary, as TCT offered full training and support for its drivers.

?It?s a 16-seater bus, you don?t need a special licence for it, you can use a regular licence,? said Heather. ?We have drivers from all walks of life, although some have had experience of driving larger vehicles, like those from farming backgrounds.

?But really, personal qualities are actually as important as being able to drive the bus ? the drivers are all cheerful, happy and willing to help,? said Heather, who said once trained, volunteers are able to choose when and how often they wish to take on driving duties.

Bob Crosbie, a regular driver with TCT, said: ?We are seeking community-minded people who can deliver our unique, friendly service.

?In addition to providing safe, reliable trips, drivers must be able to welcome customers on board with a smile and offer to help with shopping bags and luggage.

?Suitable volunteers, who can make any commitment to driving our bus, however small, could make a big difference. Our existing drivers come from very different backgrounds, but all find the work hugely rewarding and stay with us for many years.?

Anyone who would like further information about being a volunteer bus driver or a no-obligation chat about the work should call TCT driver registrar John Royle on 01822 870338.
