Probably the only redeeming feature of the unavailability of fuel in the West Devon area this past week has the been the relative peace and tranquillity.

Gone were the sad boys in their cars with more money than sense and their needlessly noisy exhausts and over acceleration; gone too were the speeding drivers who threaten life and limb at every bend on our narrow lanes; and gone were those unnecessary extra trips by car.

Just perhaps the message might sink in that, if we all drive more slowly, a little less often and with care and attention for the quality of life of those around us, we will more than save the few pence that the protesters seek to have removed in fuel duty.

The real bonus then is that we may leave for future generations a more pleasant countryside that is not swamped by motor vehicles and the ravages of global warming.
