THE Tamaritans Theatre Company?s latest production opens in Plymouth on Tuesday.

Adapted for the stage by James Roose-Evans, 84 Charing Cross Road, by Helene Hanff, is at the Drum Theatre from January 14-18.

The play tells of the lively, funny, compassionate and very warm exchange of letters, which started in 1949 and lasted for 20 years, between a struggling American writer (Helene Hanff) and a London firm of antiquarian booksellers situated at 84 Charing Cross Road.

First published in 1971 as a book, written by Helen Hanff herself, it was skilfully and lovingly adapted for the stage in 1981 and opened in the West End starring Rosemary Leach. The film version was made in 1987. As well as Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins in the main roles, it also starred Judi Dench and Maurice Denham.

Directed by Niall Clinton, whose recent successes include the memorable Shadowlands, the play is strongly cast with Doreen Sutton and George Sutton ? no relation but both very well known to Tamaritans followers ? in the main roles.

Supporting them are experienced players Brian Finch, Mark Tilden and Margaret Sutton and newcomers to the company, Soozie Copley, Debbie Temple and Jodie Wright.
