AS part of Sports Week, Okehampton Cycle Club held an open time trial last Thursday evening.
Among ten competitors were cyclists riding against the clock on the 11.2 mile course — starting at Mole Avon to Whiddon Down and back on the old A 30 — for the first time.
Despite having to endure a heavy downpour on the way out to Whiddon Down, enthusiasm was not dampened and neither were the times achieved on the night.
Steve Podd achieved the best time, clocking 30.36, followed by Mike Rice with 33.28. third was Jacky Rice with 34.08.
Dave Bessell and Peter Hodge were on their first attempt at the course and Dave Baskerville, sporting a new pair of race shorts, reduced his personal best time by two minutes.
Prizes for the fastest non-club member, Peter Hodge and fastest club member, Steve Podd, were presented by Darren Chrome, the OKCC time trial co-ordinator who was pleased with the turnout.
Full results: S Podd 30.36; M Rice 33.28; Jacky Rice 34.08; T Johnston 34.11; J Short 34.21; P Hodge 34.54; D Mills 34.58; Louise Amery 37.58; D Baskerville 38.47 pb; D Bessell 44.36.
With six events of the summer series completed, the clamour for the top place in the club time trial championship is hotting up.
It is a points system based on placings during the series and favours competitors who ride the event each week.
In joint first position are Steve Podd and Mike Rice with 46 points each, Jacky Rice is in second place on 41 points and Brian Dixon third with 40 points. Fourth position is taken by Jon Short on 31 points with Tony Johnston fifth on 27 points.
Anyone is welcome to participate on a roadworthy bicycle. If you are interest, the meeting place is Mole Avon car park, on Thursdays, ready for a 7pm start.
If you want further information about OKCC and its events call in and see Darren at Okehampton Cycles.
