HIGHLIGHT of the week for the men?s section of Tavistock Bowling Club was Thursday?s high profile Buckland Cup match against a much fancied Civil Service team.

The match went to a nail-biting finish, when, with results from three of the four rinks complete, Civil Service were losing by one shot.

The players from the three completed rinks stood as spectators watching the last rink, which had two bowls yet to be played. Tavistock skip Roy Northam?s last wood increased his rink?s lead to two shots and took the final match score to 83-80, and victory for the Tavistock men.

Skip Roy Northam and his team won 24-15, while skip Mike Allen led his side to a 22-20 victory. Skips Eric Stevens 21-27 and Malcolm Bloomer, 16-18, both lots.

Sunday saw Tavistock entertain a mixed triples team from Saltash in what proved a frustrating afternoon for club captain Brian Preece, who skipped a rink which scored seven shots on the first nine ends then failed to score again, finally going down 23-7.

Tavistock lost the match 66-92 having been defeated on four of the five rinks played, only skip Betty Browse and her team of Ian Mellor and Marlene Paramor achieving a win, thanks to a 16-15 scoreline.

Tuesday saw a Tavistock mixed team travel to Callington for a match played in brilliant sunshine and ending in a win for the Tavistock team, who won four of the five rinks played.

Skip Malcolm Bloomer led his squad of Val Southern, Ray Moore and Geoff Cork to a 22-14 win while skip Mike Allen and his team of Sandy Sanders, Derek Bradford and Lionel Sims won 22-20.

Skip Colin Tremaine and his team of John Smith, Henry Lovell and Ernie Piper won 24-18 and skip Betty Browse steered her squad of Norman Paramor, Wallace Northey and Brian Preece to a 22-18 victory.

Wednesday saw the men?s team travel to face a strong Plymouth Sir Francis Drake team. In a match where each rink played a different discipline, the Tavistock team struggled and came away having been well beaten.

Tavistock ladies faced a City Bus team on Friday in a match which ended in a 46-30 win for Tavistock, thanks to skip Marion Allen and her team of Betty Browse, Gill Saunders and Marlene Paramor winning 23-16 and skip Jenny Tremaine leading her squad of Hazel Lovell, Val Southern and Jenny Aldridge to a 23-14 victory.

Saturday saw the week end with a men?s match against a Devon County Ladies Bowling Association select team, who won three and drew one of the five rinks played. Tavistock?s only winning rink was skipped by Mike Allen, who won 23-10.
