PETER Lansdell (Letters, February 16) makes a good point about creating a cycleway alongside the A386 as 33% of all road deaths on the A386 are bikers (source BBC 4.02.2011).

According to Devon and Cornwall Police, in the five-year period ending November 2010 there were 50 collisions and one fatal accident on the stretch of the A386 between Yelverton and the Dartmoor Diner where a separate cycleway could be built.

As many as 80% of these accidents, including the fatality, happened on the section between Yelverton and the Moorland Links Hotel which has two very fast straight sections, a long bend without any double lines, no central islands or speed restrictions and is also a busy crossing for golfers.

Local residents have for years been asking the Highways Authority to complete the installation of islands and double white lines on this part of the road but without any success.
