PEOPLE can help conserve one of Britain's cutest species by joining the South West Lakes Trust search for the Hazel Dormouse at Burrator Reservoir on Sunday, September 6.

By joining the 'Great Nut Hunt' at Burrator participants will have the opportunity to learn about dormice and search for signs of their presence.

The best way to find out if dormice are using a woodland is to look for hazel nut shells — and that is what participants will be doing during the hunt.

As part of the national Great Nut Hunt, any nibbled nuts found will be sent for formal identification — the last Nut Hunt in 2001 helped to discover 70 dormouse sites and many of these are now part of the national Monitoring scheme.

The Burrator Great Nut Hunt starts at 1pm and will meet in the Forestry Yard opposite Burrator Lodge (SX552685). It is a free event for families with children aged 4 and over.
