PEOPLE in the Dartmoor area are being urged to report anyone they see fly-tipping, as part of a major national crack-down on the illegal activity.

In a nationwide campaign organised by Keep Britain Tidy, people are asked to ring the tip-off hotline number 0845 3000 630 if they witness the dumping of sofas, mattresses, garden waste, building rubble, fridges or other large items.

Local authorities and the environment agency will then spring into action and try to catch the culprits red-handed.

Backed by a poster campaign depicting a woman watching through a window as two men dump junk by the roadside, the initiative is called ?Don?t turn a blind eye?.

Robert Steemson of Dartmoor National Park Authority, said: ?Fly tipping on Dartmoor is a regular problem.

?People who fly-tip rubbish think they?ll never get caught but, working with other agencies, we will investigate all reports of illegally dumped rubbish in order that appropriate action to prosecute those who disregard the law is taken.

?Fly-tipping is unsightly, the cost of removal for local tax payers is significant, and some discarded materials including garden waste can be particularly hazardous for cattle, sheep and ponies.?

He added anyone in any doubt over how to dispose of such waste material properly should contact West Devon Borough Council.
