TECHNOLOGY is invading every aspect of our lives and that, as far as it goes, is okay and very necessary in many areas. But I feel overwhelmed by the terminology which goes with it and which is also invading our lives. Language technology has always been there but not so prevalent as now. Increasingly, we are being encouraged to dismiss the simple word in favour of high-sounding complicated phrases. Simple understandable explanations using everyday language are tossed aside in favour of ?smart-alecky? phrases. Political correctness is one indication of how extreme things have become. Personally, I see little point in telling someone on the short side, they are vertically challenged. We are all challenged in some way! But my main objection is towards people who constantly practise this technical terminology. Professionals, semi-professionals, even those engaged in mundane occupations are all at it. Agreed, in conversation with colleagues it is probably necessary to cut corners, and this is all well and good if you are an initiate. But when it spills over into everyday usage not so good. If we admit we don?t understand the consequence is a blank stare and a pitying shake of the head. But of course it could all be a clever smokescreen to avoid those who indulge themselves in this way, having to admit they just don?t know! Ted Wall Underways Bere Alston
