PROPOSED dog control orders affecting Tavistock are due to be implemented by the end of October, it has been announced. People across West Devon were asked for their opinions about the introduction of the orders, which will regularise the rules on where dogs can and cannot go in the area. It will also make clear when and where dogs must be on leads and formalise the council's anti-fouling policy. Local town and parish councils were consulted along with other relevant organisations across West Devon. A working party from Tavistock Town Council gave feedback to the borough council to be considered in the pre-consultation for the area wide dog control orders, which included for dogs to be on leads in the Courtlands Road play area, in St Eustachius' Churchyard, Whitchurch play area, St John's Avenue and Benson Meadow, and for the exclusion of dogs from Plymouth Road Cemetery. In the public feedback, received by West Devon Borough Council in relation to the areas covered by Tavistock Town Council, the main areas for concern appeared to be the areas of St John's Avenue and Benson Meadow being designated as an area for dogs to be on lead. One person stated that the new orders have left dog owners in Tavistock with 'no area to exercise their animals off a lead'. 'Dog owners in Tavistock get poor representation and this is an opportunity to work with them rather than create even more draconian restrictions which cause frustrations and conflict.' One dog owner said they agreed with most of the new by-law proposals but 'strongly rejected' the on lead proposal for Benson Meadow: 'I have always gone out of my way to exercise my dog off lead in this area as opposed to what I think of as the family side. Where else can dogs run free in town if not at Benson Meadow?' The feedback received is currently being considered by West Devon Borough Council. A spokesman for West Devon Borough Council said: 'There was a good response to our consultation regarding dog control orders with 74 comments received. 'We are currently considering the feedback and are making some changes. 'Our hope is that the new dog control orders will be in place by the end of next month (October).'
