AN appeal for information was this week issued by a Tavistock school, which has unearthed a stash of ageing silver trophies during a New Year clear out. The mystery box of silverware was found at St Peter's School last week. Staff had been clearing out a resources room to make way for some building work at the premises. Headteacher John George said: 'We have been having new toilets built inside the school and when we moved stuff from the room, we found this box on top of a cupboard. 'I did see them many years ago when I first moved to the school, when we did discuss selling them, but nothing was done about it and now they've turned up again. 'I guess there are about five or six of them, and one even has values on it, I imagine for the metal content.' Mr George said the trophies were obviously Tavistock based but the inscriptions do not mention St Peter's School. 'I think a couple of them date back to the days when St Rumon's was a primary school if not a secondary school. We opened St Peters in 1976 and they certainly date from before then.' Mr George said the school, which now has 138 pupils at its Greenlands site, would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about the cups, before a decision is made about their future. 'It may be that we would consider selling them if they are worth anything. We are looking to extend the classrooms at the school in the future, to make them half as big again, and that is going to cost hundreds of thousands, so every little will help,' he said. St Peter's governor Hilary Johnson said: 'We just don't know anything about these cups and it would be nice to hear from anyone in the community who could tell us anything about them or has associations with them. 'Some of them date back to the 1940s and some are really beautiful — it would be really interesting to find out a bit about their history.' The silverware includes the Tavistock Chess Club Sheild, 1957; The Butcher Cup School House Swimming Championship awarded 1924-26 to St George and St Eustachius houses; the Admiral Jinkin House Cup; the Dolvin Road Old Boys AFC trophy and the H Moore Trophy dating back to 1949. Anyone who can help with information about the mystery trophies should call St Peter's School on 01822 614640.
