SEVEN out of ten drivers who visited Okehampton Show did not feel they needed to wear their glasses for driving, according to a survey conducted by Specsavers Opticians.

At their stall at Okehampton Show in August, Specsavers offered motorists free vision screening with an auto refractor, and tested distance using number plates as part of its Drive Safe campaign to educate people about the importance of good eyesight while driving.

The survey revealed that:

l 70% of people did not feel the need to wear their glasses for driving

l 72% never carried a spare pair of glasses in the car

l 28% believed that drivers over 40 years of age should have their vision retested at regular intervals

Specsavers Okehampton?s store director, Julia Peggs, said: ?The survey results highlight an issue that is just as important as drink driving.

?We want people to think more carefully about their sight before they get behind the wheel, preventing them from putting themselves and other road-users or pedestrians in great danger.?

Nigel Bishop, Police road safety and traffic management officer, said: ?We fully support all activity that encourages road safety.

?Many people may be driving with uncorrected vision, completely unaware that they are putting lives at risk by sitting behind the wheel.

?Eyesight does deteriorate with age, but it is not just the elderly who need to have their eyesight tested.?
