RE YOUR front page photograph (April 25) of Mike Hall 'dressed as a mediaeval knight'.
I don't object to him observing St George's Day or dressing up in fancy dress, but I do object to him using the town war memorial as an advertising prop in his 'Pound, Crown and Sovereignty' campaign.
The abiding lesson of the two world wars is surely of the dangers posed by unthinking nationalistic pride and its manipulation by unscrupulous leaders.
The post-war drive towards international co-operation with Europe was spawned by the recognition of the appalling cruelties and human disasters produced by unbridled nationalism.
Many of those who led and lead the endeavour, and many of those who support it, consider themselves as least as patriotic as the flag-wavers.
However one defines true patriotism no one should posture within the bounds of the war memorial for their own narrow interest, and to promote what many see as a dangerous nationalism here.
