A DIVERSE musical duo will be captivating audiences in Meavy this month, with their feisty Spanish and Latin American music contrasted with Baroque and classical pieces.

A flute and classical guitar concert is being given by Duo Volatus at St Peter's Church in Meavy to raise funds for the Friend's of St Peter's Church.

Guitarist Alison Smith and flutist Ruth Ballantyne make up the duo, and will be performing a varied programme including Argentinean tangos, the Grand Sonata by Giuliani, the Baroque Sonata by Baron, a piece written by a local composer Philip Buttall and a number of other pieces.

Both Alison and Ruth are accomplished musicians independently.

Alison performs nation-wide and abroad at various music festivals and concerts, has broadcast on BBC Radio, has taught at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and recently released a new CD, Recuerdos.

Ruth has played with some of the best orchestras in the South West, is actively involved in workshops with 4Flutes — a charity she set up in 2003, and has worked alongside and performed with Jonathan Snowdon, Clare Southworth, Mike Mower and Gareth Mclearnon.

The concert will take place on Friday March 26 at 7.30pm at Meavy church and pre-concert suppers will be available at the Royal Oak Inn adjacent to the church.
