Carlsberg South Western League Tavistock 2 Newquay 4 BOTH teams were missing several players. The Lambs were without the suspended Glynn Hobbs, Mike Arscott, John Hajiyianni and the injured Sean Cann. Darren Babb and Chris Short retained their places in the line up with Pete Southcott and Ben Palmer drafted in on the bench. Newquay in contrast were without five players on Cornwall County Youth duty and despite a request to have the game postponed it was not granted by the League. The game was in little doubt despite heavy rain but it had to have a pitch inspection by referee Mark Atkins. At the end it was Newquay who were the more thankful as a hat trick from Glenn Squires helped them to a deserved victory. With a strong wind behind them it all started so well for the Lambs when they went ahead after just five minutes. Mark Conday?s header from James Steer?s cross was palmed away across the goal by keeper Joe Crane for Paul Adcock to follow up and slot home. They had to increase their lead and did not create enough chances to do so. The ?Peppermints? equalised on the half hour. From a corner kick the ball was partially cleared to the corner of the area for Squires to coolly send the ball back over defence and keeper Andy Meeds for a well taken goal. Simon Skews then saw his shot fumbled by Crane and cleared before the visitors had a very good chance on the stroke of half time when Rob Stapleton had a ?free? header from an Eglinton free kick to put his effort wide from six yards. A great start to the second half for the Lambs when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Conday for him to pick himself up and slot home from the spot. They had another chance to go further ahead on the hour. Skews put Conday down the wing to cross in low for Conday to step over the ball to let in Will Stringer but his first time shot went wide. Five minutes later the visitors were back on level terms. A cross in from the right saw Dave Hallett attempting to control and was adjudged to have handled with Squires getting his second from the spot. Five minutes later the visitors went in front for the first time. It was from a consecutive corner that was not cleared with the ball coming down from height that Squires was able to turn and fire home despite Meeds getting a hand to it. There was to be no way back for the Lambs and Newquay put the seal on a battling victory with the fourth goal on the stroke of full time when again from a corner it was not cleared to allow Jon May to fire home from the edge of the area via a wicked deflection. A very disappointing display and result against an equally depleted opposition who took their chances and deserved the victory.
