WEIR Quay Sailing Club has been holding its first ever open day at its club headquarters by the River Tamar.

The club, on the Bere Ferrers peninsula, was formed in 1966, primarily as a dinghy sailing club, but over the years cruising yachts on the club?s moorings have tended to dominate its water-based activities.

Keen to redress the balance and encourage young and old to take up the sport, the club held a ?Try-A-Sail? day with more than 50 youngsters from Bere Alston scouts and cubs, Buckland scouts and cubs and Horrabridge sea scouts plus adult helpers and other visitors given the opportunity to go out in bright sunshine on one of 15 sailing dinghies provided and manned by club members.

After a free lunch, the youngsters were given a rope workshop and a boat part treasure hunt.

The event was such a success it is hoped to repeat it at a later date.

Anyone interested in coming and trying sailing should contact club secretary, Sally Mulford on 01822 841126.
