THERE'S an opportunity to enjoy a three course meal while raising money for a good cause next week, at a special charity evening.

The Royal Oak Inn at Meavy is hosting the evening on March 14 in support of 'Beating Bowel Cancer'.

The three course meal will be limited to 30 places at a cost of £20 each, with all proceeds going to the charity.

The event has been organised by Rebecca Harwood, a nurse on the gastroenterology ward at Derriford Hospital.

Rebecca said: 'Bowel cancer remains the UK's second biggest cancer killer — yet 90% of cases could be treated successfully if they are caught early.

'Beating Bowel Cancer is a UK charity dedicated to saving lives by working in partnership with individuals, local communities, clinical communities and government to improve public awareness of bowel cancer and to increase the rate of early diagnosis.

'This charity is one that I hold close to my heart for many reasons — the main one being that I am a registered nurse that works on a gastroenterology ward within Derriford Hospital, where I meet patients that suffer from bowel cancer on a day to day basis.

'I am truly blessed to work within the area that I do and I feel that it is time that I gave something more into nursing by getting adventurous and running the London Marathon for "Beating Bowel Cancer".'

The charity dinner and auction at the Royal Oak will raise money towards Rebecca's London Marathon sponsorship.

The dinner is being supported by the suppliers Dartmoor Farmers, Howells Butchers of Tavistock, Tamar Valley Fruiterers, Caterfood of Paignton, Moby Nicks of Plymouth and St Austell Brewery.

Following the dinner an auction of enticing goods will be held, including a weekend with a brand new Audi TT Roadster or A5 Cabriolet, a Plymouth Gin Distillery tour, family admissions to various attractions, a day's hire of a mini digger, one night's free stay at Bovey Castle as well as many other items.

Rebecca said she was 'truly amazed' by the support she had received from local businesses in order to make the event a success.
