AFTER the opening of Tavistock's much anticipated BMX trails was postponed due to continuous bad weather, progress has resumed on the site with the planting of several trees to provide shelter and screening.

The town council's works department, along with members of TaviRiders —who spearheaded the project with support from Tavistock Youth Café — were busy digging holes in the mud last week at the site in the Meadows.

The site will have hedging around some of the edges and taller trees on the edge alongside Plymouth Road, which it is hoped will provide screening for nearby properties.

Vicki Lloyd, of Tavistock Youth Café, said: 'We're doing this, one, because it's a conservation area, and two, because it'll provide some shelter.

'It will take a couple of months for the trees to get established and we won't be thinking about opening for a few months yet.

'Hopefully, we should be okay for the summer, providing it doesn't rain continuously until June.

'Every bit of progress is exciting. This will change the way it looks — it will be nice.'

Tavistock Town Council works administrator James Clapp said: 'We're planting English Oak, Swamp Cypress, Weeping Willow, Giant Sequoia and Hornbeam.

'They are all semi-mature so should get established quite well. Once the trees are in place it will shelter the site from residents.'

A few members of the BMX trails management committee were there to lend a hand — Boris Jackson, Darren Guppy and Jacob Gibbins.

Boris said: 'We want to show that the people who want this are willing to help out. There are a few people on the committee of all different ages but they couldn't help out today because they're at school or work.'
