Tavistock 22 Wessex 7 TAVISTOCK knew that they would have to improve their performance from their opening day league defeat away at South Molton the previous Saturday when they entertained Wessex at Sandy Park on Saturday. The performance was immeasurably better and Tavistock eventually ran out convincing winners in a hard physical contest. The pack laid the foundation for victory with the front row of Baker, Martin and Monk dominating the scrums and the back row of Cole, Dawe and Rotton scrapping in the loose for every piece of possession. The one area where Wessex initially seemed to get the upper hand was at the lineout, but by the end of the match Cole and Hunt were securing good possession. Wessex took the lead midway through the first half when after giving possession away under their own posts Matt Davies scored a try that Lee Thorpe converted. Tavistock got back onto level terms in injury time when winger Lawrence Evans crossed on the left to score a try, for fly half Josh Sutton to convert. For thirty minutes Tavistock were constantly attacking to secure two tries and only in the final ten minutes did Wessex put pressure on the Tavistock defence. Seven minutes into the half Tavistock took the lead for the first time when some good forward work allowed second row Darren Cole to score in the right hand corner. Tavistock then tested the Wessex defence via the backs. After a period of pressure and centre Matt Trevithick scored close to the posts, Josh Sutton added the conversion. Tavistock then had to repel the Wessex fight back. The team had the final word when after breaking out of defence they forced Wessex into a mistake and Josh Sutton slotted a penalty goal to put the icing on a well deserved victory. This coming weekend Tavistock are in cup action on Saturday in the National Powergen Junior Vase when they are away to Prince Rock.
