OKEHAMPTON and District Lions Club's donkey derby, companion and family dog show provided a great day out with a host of entertainment last Sunday at Simmon's Park.
The Lions expressed enormous thanks to everyone who helped make the Donkey Derby so successful. The town council, race sponsors, advertisers and donkey 'owners', along with the stall holders and the dog show, all contributed to a respectable profit, which will be distributed to Okehampton and district charities and organisations.
The crowd was also entertained by Andrei Burton who performed stunt tricks on his mountain bike before going on to drive in the Hilton Supplies Sulkey Race, while Leads Dog Agility put on a demonstration — and then invited the public to have-a-go.
The refreshment and catering van kept everyone contented and there was even a guest appearance by Polo, the pony bought with last year's proceeds for the Hittisleigh group of Riding for the Disabled.
The six race winners competed in the Georgian Windows Championship and the winner was 24/7 owned by Whitehouse Services and ridden by Kieran Lee. Deborah and Amanda won their sulkey races and numerous people enjoyed donkey rides.
The first prize winners in the Rant and Rage drawing competition were Isla Brogan, Charlotte Gazzard and Joshua Bridger.
The winning number on the programmes was 652 and the prize can be claimed from Lion Peter Roberts.
Peter said: 'In spite of the odd shower the day went very well and we look forward to next years event.'
