Tavistock Squash 4 Spreadbury Dentals 1 FOR this game against their experienced opposition Tavistock were without their inspirational captain Mike Gray or number two Dave Ruffell but Rob Giddens, Malcolm Holton and Pete Walshe anchored the team to victory. Tavistock's Robin Burdfield took on veteran league player Ray Spreadbury. Robin won the first game before Ray took the second and third game with a range of tight drop shots and cross-court shots. Ray paused for breath which allowed Robin to win the fourth game. In the fifth both players chased every ball and Spreadbury stormed to an eight points to three lead. Robin fought back with skill and determination to make it nine points each before his superior fitness and persistence paid off to win 10-9 and the game 3-2. Tavistock's Pete Walshe played Fiona Spreadbury, who has recently recovered from an ankle injury. Pete's tight services put Fiona under a lot of pressure and Pete won the first game 9-4 and the second 9-1. However, Fiona rallied in the third game and began to find her form only for Pete to win the fourth game 9-5 and the match 3-1. Malcolm Holton returned to his winning ways against an out-of-form Les Nicholls, who suffered from a back injury. Les found it difficult to reach Malcolm's range of low shots and Malcolm romped home to win 3-0. Phil Honey played his first match for the team against Mike Bow. Phil won the first game 9-3, and began to find his rhythm. However, Mike came back strongly, winning the second game 9-7 and the third game 9-6. Phil re-found his form and with an array of tight, low shorts and driving the ball tight to length, he won the fourth game 9-5. With the match finely balanced Phil looked the stronger and. Mike looked tired and out of steam. However in the decider Mike swamped Phil with a flurry of shots that left his opponent unable to respond and win 9-2 and the match by three games to two. Rob Giddens has become a steadying influence on the team and is a reliable and winning number one. Up against a veteran of Devon and Company Leagues, Andy Davies, Rob stormed into the lead to win the first game 9-1. Andy was under pressure and tried to respond to Rob's charge, but lost the second game 2-9. Rob scented victory and using a variety of tight, hard shots, forced Andy to scrabble for points. Rob romped home, winning the third game 9-4, taking the match 3-0.
